Product Variation-Level Limits

Product Variation-Level Limits

Product Variation limits allow you to control purchase rules for variable products. You can set the same rules for all variations of a product (parent product), or give each variation its own rules.

Understanding Product Variation-Level Limits

Two Levels of Control

Variable products have two levels where you can set limits:

1. Parent Product Level

  • Applies to ALL variations of the product
  • Sets default behavior for the entire variable product
  • Can control whether variations combine or are counted separately (Pro)

2. Individual Variation Level (Pro)

  • Applies to ONE specific variation
  • Overrides parent product settings for that variation
  • Allows unique limits per size/color/attribute

How to Configure

1. Parent Product Rules (All Variations)

These rules apply to all variations of the variable product uniformly.

Step 1: Navigate to Product Settings

  • Go to Products > All Products
  • Click Edit on the variable product
  • In the Product Data section, go to the General tab
Parent Product Rules

Step 2: Configure Parent-Level Options

Exclude Min/Max Rule

  • Removes all purchase restrictions from this entire product (all variations)
  • When checked: No limits apply to any variation

Override Global

Check this to enable custom limits for the variable product. Once enabled, the product will ignore global limits and follow only the settings you define here. You can set:

Override Global
  • Minimum Quantity – Set the minimum number of units that must be purchased.
  • Maximum Quantity – Set the maximum number of units allowed per order.
  • Quantity Step – Define quantity increments in multiples (e.g., 2, 4, 6).
  • Minimum Total Value (Pro) – The minimum spend required for this product.
  • Maximum Total Value (Pro) – The maximum spend allowed for this product.

Ignore Category Limits

  • Prevent any category-level restrictions from applying to this variable product.

Allow Combination (Pro)

  • Controls how variation quantities are counted
  • When enabled: Limits apply to TOTAL of all variations combined
  • When disabled: Limits apply to EACH variation separately

Step 4: Save Changes

Update the product to apply parent-level settings.

2. Individual Variation Rules (Specific Variations)

To apply rules to ONE specific variation only, check out this doc.

Rule hierarchy reminder

Variation-level limits override Product-Level Limits, Category-Level Limits, and Global-Level Limits. If both parent and variation-specific rules exist, the variation-specific rule takes priority.

The plugin checks rules in this order (highest to lowest): Role-Based → Product Variation (you are here) → Product → Category → Global.

Next Step

Now that you’ve configured product variation rules, you can extend control further with:
